Newton Fund 2020/21 call open - Institutional Links and Newton Fund Impact Scheme

Institutional Links (IL) is a seed-funding research fund that is aiming to establish or continue research collaboration between Thai-UK researchers and institutes. For this call, the British Council is partnering with 1) Office of Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (OPS), and 2) National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT).

Call period: 20 April – 12 June 2020 (16.00 hr UK time)

Grant value: 50,000 – 100,000 GBP / project (depending on the partner – please see full guideline for more details)

Project Period: 12 months

Theme: BCG and any Covid-19 related topics


·         IL-NRCT

Theme: (1) Bio Economy, Circular Economy and Green Economy, (2) AI for all, Data Economy, (3) Aging Society, (4) Social Science and Humanity, (5) Sustainable Management of Natural Resource

Newton Fund Impact Scheme (NFIS)

Newton Fund Impact Scheme (NFIS) is a research fund given to a project that has a plan to broaden its impact to prototype phase and/ or to national policy suggestion/ implementation level, thereby directly increasing engagement with the users. This also include developing meaningful partnerships with private sector, businesses, start-ups, SMEs, NGOs, etc. Please note that eligible applicants must previously receive grant from Newton Fund, or a Co-PI from the previous project (see guidelines for specific information about eligible Newton Fund projects).


For this programme, the British Council is also delivering on behalf of other UK Delivery Partners (for example the Academies, and UKRI), and is partnering with National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) for NFIS.


Call period: 20 April – 15 June 2020 (12:00 hr UK time)

Grant value: 100,000 – 200,000 GBP / project

Project period: 12 months


Theme: (1) 10 S-Curves, and

 (2) Covid-19 topics:

  • R&D for COVID-19 rapid test
  • R&D for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as surgical gowns, safety coveralls and related equipment
  • R&D for ventilators and respirators
  • R&D for negative-pressure facilities and field hospitals
